Removal the cylinder head (BMW 3 Series E21)
Remove the air filter.
Disconnect the wires from the battery terminals.
Disconnect the radiator drain hose and drain the coolant.
Disconnect the cooling system hoses and electrical wires from the cylinder head.
Disconnect the fuel supply and fuel drain hoses.
Remove the oil dipstick tube bracket mounting bolt and the starter bracket mounting bolt to the intake manifold
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the throttle control sector, then move the rod to the side, having first loosened the nuts securing it to the intermediate support.
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
Remove the air supply casing.
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the throttle control lever and remove the rod from its mounting bracket.
Loosen the nozzle injection line fittings and disconnect the lines from the mounting brackets.
Loosen the bolts securing the intake pipe of the 3rd cylinder.
Disconnect the fuel lines from the injectors.
Disconnect the fuel line from the starting injector and the hose from the additional air supply valve.
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the control lever last, having first removed the rod from the bracket.
Disconnect the contactless ignition system switch plug and remove the electrical wire from the mounting brackets.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the vacuum regulator of the ignition distributor sensor and unscrew the bolts securing the bracket to the intake manifold.
Loosen the oil dipstick tube mounting bolt.
Unscrew the fuel supply line fittings from the injectors.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Remove the distributor cap.
Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke; in this case, the mark on the rotor should coincide with the mark on the ignition distributor housing, the "OT" mark on the flywheel should be visible in the clutch housing hatch, and the installation mark on the rim of the crankshaft pulley should be opposite the pointer on the lower cover of the valve timing mechanism.
Remove the upper timing cover.
Unscrew the plug of the chain tensioner plunger, then remove the spring and plunger.
Remove the camshaft timing pulley.
Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and remove the exhaust pipe bracket mounting bolts.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts and remove it.

On carburetor engines
Disconnect the fuel supply and fuel drain hoses.
Remove the oil dipstick tube bracket mounting bolt and the starter bracket mounting bolt to the intake manifold
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the throttle control sector, then move the rod to the side, having first loosened the nuts securing it to the intermediate support.
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
On engines of cars of the model "320i"
Remove the air supply casing.
Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the throttle control lever and remove the rod from its mounting bracket.
Loosen the nozzle injection line fittings and disconnect the lines from the mounting brackets.
Loosen the bolts securing the intake pipe of the 3rd cylinder.
Disconnect the fuel lines from the injectors.
On engines of cars of the model "318i"
Disconnect the fuel line from the starting injector and the hose from the additional air supply valve.
Disconnect the throttle control rod from the control lever last, having first removed the rod from the bracket.
Disconnect the contactless ignition system switch plug and remove the electrical wire from the mounting brackets.

On all engines
Remove the cylinder head cover.
