Disassembling the cylinder head (BMW 5 Series E12)

Remove the ignition distributor and its mounting bracket.

Install the cylinder head on the support 6025/1 (models "518", "520") or on stand 7003/1 (models "525", "526").

Remove the fuel pump, take out the pusher.

Remove the central oil supply pipe to the rocker arm shafts.

Remove the camshaft as follows:
  • set the intake and exhaust rocker arms to the position of maximum clearance between the rocker arm adjusting eccentric and the end of the valve stem. Otherwise, the valve stems may bend;
  • install the 6025/1 push frame (models "518", "520") or 6025/1 (model "520i") or 7001/1 (models "525", "528");
  • remove the camshaft mounting flange (models "518", "520") or locking bolts 4 and 5 (see photo) (models "525", "528");
  • remove the camshaft from the cylinder head supports.

Remove the pressure frame.



Move the rocker arms with the support washers along the rocker arm axes and remove the retaining rings.

On cars of models "518", "520" remove the rocker arm axles using tool 6012.

On cars of models "525", "528" unscrew the rocker arm axle hole plugs and remove the front axles using the 7004 inertial puller, after removing the mounting studs. After crushing the locking plate, remove the rear rocker arm axles.

On cars of models «525», «528» unscrew the rocker arm axle hole plugs and remove the front axles…


Remove the rocker arm axles carefully. Remove the spring, thrust washer, rocker arms, mounting washer, etc. from each axle (see photo) and place them in order.

Install the pressure frame on the cylinder head, compress the valve springs and release the valves from the crackers. Remove the springs with the plates, take out the valves and put them in order. Remove the oil deflector caps from the valve guides. If necessary, use a universal spring compressor to compress the valve springs.
