Adjusting the valve timing (BMW X3 E83)

1. Remove the cylinder head cover.

2. The camshaft cams of the intake valves of the 1st cylinder are facing downwards.

3. Unscrew the bolt (1).

Note: First, you need to unscrew the bolt (1), since it will be inaccessible when in the TDC position.


4. Remove the protective cover in the direction indicated by the arrow.

Note: When installing, it is necessary to put the protective cover back on, lightly lubricating it.


5. Turn the engine by the crankshaft using tool 116480.

6. Lock the crankshaft by the flywheel using tool 115180.

Attention: Do not unscrew the bolts (2).

7. Unscrew the bolt (1) on the sprocket.

  • The marking (1) on the intake camshaft must be flush with the cylinder head.
  • The marking (2) on the exhaust camshaft must be flush with the cylinder head.
  • To adjust the sprockets, the exhaust camshaft can be turned by the hex key.

8. Place tool 116321 on the intake camshaft and secure with tool 116322.

Note: When installing, the exhaust camshaft can only be checked again, adjustment is not possible.


9. Tighten the bolt (1) on the sprocket.

  • When installing, it is necessary to rotate the engine crankshaft by the central bolt by 360°.
  • The third sprocket mounting bolt is now accessible.


10. Tighten the third sprocket mounting bolt.
