Removal and installation the clutch master cylinder (BMW 3 Series E21)

Removal

Remove the left lower instrument panel trim.

On vehicles with a 4-cylinder engine, disconnect the cable from the accelerator pedal and remove it from the hole in the front shield.

Disconnect the clutch master cylinder piston pusher from the clutch pedal.



Loosen nut 2 and unscrew piston pusher 1 from the master cylinder housing.

Drain the working fluid from the clutch and brake hydraulic drive reservoir until its level is equal to the nipple of the clutch hydraulic drive system.

On vehicles with a 6-cylinder engine, remove the brake line from the bracket that mounts it to the front shield and bend it back slightly.

Disconnect the feed line from the clutch master cylinder.

Disconnect the line from the slave cylinder from the master cylinder.

Remove the master cylinder by unscrewing the mounting bolts.

Installation

Installation of the master cylinder is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

• before installation, make sure that there are bushings 3 in the piston pusher eye;
• after installing the master cylinder, bleed the clutch hydraulic line and, by changing the position of the master cylinder piston pusher, adjust the clutch pedal travel until it hits the floor mat, which should be 155 mm.
