Removal and installation, checking of the starting valve (BMW 3 Series E30)

            0

Table of contents: Removal ↓ Examination ↓ Installation ↓
The starting valve provides additional fuel to the intake manifold during cold engine starting. Valve failure makes engine difficult to start (both cold and heated) and is the cause of transient disturbances and high fuel consumption.

The thermal time switch limits the injection time of the starting valve depending on the engine temperature.

Removal

Disconnect the starting valve connector.

Disconnect the fuel hose from the starting valve, having first released the mounting clamp.

Caution: If the valve is removed for inspection only, the electrical wire and hose remain connected.

Unscrew 2 nuts and remove the starting valve from the intake manifold.

Examination

Connect the starting valve connector, the fuel hose is connected.

Disconnect the thermal time switch connector.

Connect the black and red wire of the thermal time switch to ground.

Caution: Do not connect the black-yellow wire to ground. Risk of short circuit!

Place a measuring cup under the starting valve.

Disconnect the connector of the transistor ignition system switching unit so that the engine cannot start.

Disconnect the connector of the transistor ignition system switching unit so that the engine cannot…

Turn on the starter briefly. The starting valve should provide a uniform cone of fuel injection.

Not a single drop of fuel should appear from the starting valve within one minute. The valve should not be wet on the outside.

Installation

Install the starting valve with a new gasket and secure it with 2 nuts.

Connect the connectors of the thermal time switch and the transistor ignition switching unit.

If the fuel hose was removed, connect it to the starting valve and secure it with a clamp. Connect the connector.
