If you do not adhere to the indication of service intervals, then routine maintenance is carried out every 20,000 km, or at least once every 2 years. Maintenance work to be performed less frequently (corresponds to BMW Inspection II) listed at the end of the scheduled maintenance plan.
Notes: In order to ensure the correct operation of the engine, it is recommended to visit a BMW Service Center as part of the service in order to interrogate the fault memory of the diagnostic system there. If any electronic element fails, the electronic engine control system switches to emergency operation unnoticed by the driver. The consequence of this is that the engine does not operate optimally (increased fuel consumption).
Engine and exhaust system
- Interrogation of the drive of malfunctions of the diagnostic system.
- Changing engine oil and oil filter.
- Replacing the air filter element (In dusty conditions, replace more frequently, but at least every 2 years).
- V-belts: Check the condition and tension of all belts.
- Cooling and heating system: Checking the coolant concentration (every 2 years), external inspection with control of tightness and lack of pollution.
- Exhaust system Check for damage.
- Engine: External inspection of leaks.
- Fuel line and fuel tank: Check the gasket, tightness and condition of the hoses and tubes.
- Diesel engines: Removing water from the fuel filter.
Clutch, gearbox, transmission
- Coupling: Checking the tightness of hoses, pipelines, joints; checking the brake fluid level.
- Gearbox and rear axle reducer: Check for leaks, check oil level.
- Automatic transmission: Checking the fluid level, topping up, if necessary, ATF.
- Half shafts: Checking the integrity and tightness of the cuffs of the hinges.
- Cardan shaft: Checking the wear of the articulated discs.
Front axle and steering
- Steering tips: Checking backlash and fastening, checking anthers.
- Ball joints: check anthers.
- Steering: Check for backlash, check for tightness of the cuffs, tighten the mounting bolts to the required tightening torques.
- Power steering. Check fluid level, top up if necessary. Check the tightness of the steering gear, power steering pump and all hoses and connections.
Body
- Hinges and door locks: Grease.
- Hood hinges, upper and lower parts of hood locks: Grease with universal grease.
- Underbody protection and cavity preservation: Check.
- Seat belts: Integrity check.
- Sliding roof panel: Clean the rails and lubricate with silicone spray.
- Cooling system and heater: Replacing the microfilter (if available).
Brake system, tires, wheels
- Wheels: Removing, checking the condition of rims (also from within), cleaning the wheels and fitting the wheel bolts to the prescribed torque.
- Tires: Check profile depth and tire pressure; checking the integrity and wear of tires (including spare wheel).
- Brake system: Check brake fluid level and brake pad thickness. Checking the condition of the outer surfaces of the brake discs.
- Brake system: Brake fluid change (once every two years). Checking the integrity and tightness of hoses, tubes, brake cylinders and joints.
Electrical equipment
- Lighting system: Check and, if necessary, adjust the headlights, check the rear lights and direction indicators. Checking the sound signal.
- Beep: Check the beep.
- Wiper: Check for wear on the brushes.
- Windshield and headlight washer: Checking the functioning, adjusting the jets, topping up the liquid, checking the functioning of the headlight washers.
- Battery: Check voltage and electrolyte level.
Additionally every 40,000 km:
- Models 316i/318i before August 1993 (M40 engine): Checking the toothed belt tension.
- Automatic transmission: Oil change.
- Rear axle reducer: Oil change.
- Petrol engines: Replacement of spark plugs.
- Diesel engines: Replacing the fuel filter.
Additionally every 80,000 km:
- Automatic transmission: Oil change.

- Handbrake: Check the thickness of the brake pads, replace if necessary.
- Front wheel bearings: Check play.
- Engine compression: Check.
- Exhaust system: Tightening the nuts on the flanges of the exhaust manifold and front exhaust pipe to the prescribed torque.
- Models 316i/318i before August 1993 (M40 engine): Toothed belt replacement (at least once every 4 years).
