Trunk Lid/Tailgate Lock Components — Removal and Installation (BMW 3 Series E46)
Removal
Trunk lid lock (sedan and coupe models)
1. Open the trunk lid, unscrew the screws securing the tool box lid and the lid hinge (Fig. 17.1). Remove the tool box from the trunk trim.

2. Remove the central pins of the retainers, then remove the retainers themselves and remove the trim from the trunk lid.
3. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the lock cover, unscrew the two screws and, starting from the corner opposite the lock, carefully remove the cover (Fig. 17.3).

4. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the lock.
5. Unscrew the three screws and remove the lock from the trunk lid 6a. Disconnect the actuator rod from the lock (Fig. 17.5).

6. Remove the trunk lid trim (see points 1 and 2).
7. Remove the driver's side light assembly (see chapter 12, paragraph 7).
8. After removing the light assembly, unscrew the two screws and remove the cover from the back of the lock cylinder.
9. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the lock cylinder.
10. Remove the retainer, then carefully disconnect the actuator rod from the cylinder lever (fig. 17.10).

11. Remove the two screws, turn the cylinder clockwise so that its protrusions align with the grooves in the panel and remove it (fig. 17.11).

12. Remove the trim from both rear body pillars (see paragraph 27).
13. Remove the plastic plugs and unscrew the four screws securing the upper part of the luggage compartment sill trim panel, then unscrew the two lower screws. Remove the trim from the vehicle (fig. 17.13).

14. Using a felt-tip pen, mark the position of the lock relative to the panel. Unscrew the four screws and remove the lock (fig. 17.14). Disconnect the electrical connector from the lock.

15. If necessary, unscrew the two screws and remove the actuator from the lock.
Installation
16. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Please note the following:
- a) Connect all electrical wiring connectors and secure the wire harnesses.
- b) Align all marks made before removal.
- c) Before installing the trim, check the operation of the lock/lock cylinder.
- d) Tighten all fasteners securely.
