Sunroof — Basic Information, Electric Drive Replacement (BMW 3 Series E46)
Basic information
1. Due to the complexity of the sunroof drive mechanism, a lot of experience is required to successfully repair, replace or adjust it. To replace it, you first need to remove the headliner, which is a complex and tedious operation. Therefore, if any problems with the sunroof occur, (except for replacing the electric drive) please contact a specialized service station.
2. In models with an electric sunroof drive, if the drive fails, first check the fuse. If you are unable to identify and eliminate the malfunction, you can open or close the sunroof manually using an end wrench, turning the motor shaft. (The required key is included in the vehicle's standard tool kit). To access the electric drive, remove the ceiling trim panel cover. Disconnect the wiring connector from the electric drive and turn the drive shaft with a socket wrench, moving the hatch to the desired position (Fig. 22.2).

3. Carefully remove the interior light from the ceiling. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from it.
4. Carefully lower the front edge of the electric drive panel and remove it together with the switch. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the panel.
5. Unscrew the three fastening screws and remove the electric drive. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the electric drive (Fig. 22.4).

6. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Set the electric drive to its initial position (see below).
Setting the electric drive to the initial position
7. Connect the battery and turn on the ignition. Press and hold the sunroof tilt switch (tilt position).
8. After the sunroof has reached the tilt position, hold the switch down for 20 seconds. The initial position setting will be completed after the rear part of the sunroof has lifted slightly.
