Central locking system components — removal and installation (BMW 3 Series E46)
Note: The central locking system has a self-diagnosis function. Before removing any system component, contact your BMW dealer or a qualified specialist to troubleshoot the fault.
Removal
Electronic control unit (ECU)
1. The central locking system is controlled by an electronic control unit (ZKE V), which is sometimes called the main unit (GM V). This unit is located in the passenger compartment, behind the glove box. To access the unit, remove the glove box (see paragraph 27).
2. Disconnect the fasteners and lower the control unit down.
3. Remove the retainer, then disconnect the electrical wiring connector and remove the ECU from the vehicle interior.
Door lock actuator
4. This mechanism is part of the door lock. Removing the door lock is described in paragraph 13.
Trunk lid lock actuator
5. This mechanism is the trunk lid lock. Removing the lock is described in paragraph 17.
Luggage compartment door lock actuator
6. Remove the tailgate lock (see paragraph 17).
7. Remove the two screws and disconnect the actuator from the lock.
Fuel tank flap solenoid
8. Turn the lock 90° and partially remove the trunk trim on the right side.
9. Remove the wall of the additional box, then pull back the luggage compartment trim (to access the electromagnet).
10. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector, then loosen the mounting screws and remove the electromagnet from the luggage compartment (fig. 18.10).

Glove box lock electromagnet
11. Remove the glove box (see paragraph 27).
12. Disconnect the electromagnet rod from the lock, unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the electromagnet.
Installation
13. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Before installing the removed trim panels, check the operation of the central locking system.
