Steering hydraulic fluid level (BMW 3 Series E46)
Before checking
Place the machine on a horizontal surface.
Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
Turn off the engine.
To perform the check correctly, do not turn the steering wheel after the engine has stopped.
Safety first!
The need to frequently top up the fluid indicates that there are leaks in the system that need to be found and fixed immediately.
1. The power steering fluid reservoir is located at the front of the engine compartment. To access the reservoir, remove the air inlet duct cover. Wipe the area around the filler neck with a clean rag, then unscrew and remove the reservoir cap with the dipstick.
2. Wipe the dipstick and screw the tank cap back on. Unscrew the cap again and check the fluid level. The fluid level should be between the "MAX" and "MIN" marks.
3. If necessary, add fluid to the reservoir. After adjusting the fluid level, tighten the reservoir cap.
