Tire condition and pressure (BMW 3 Series E46)

            0

It is very important to keep your tires in good condition and to make sure they are properly inflated - a tire blowout at high speed is very dangerous. Tire wear depends on your driving style: sharp braking and acceleration, sharp turns lead to rapid tire wear. As a rule, the front tires wear faster than the rear ones. Therefore, it is recommended to swap tires from time to time - from the front axle to the rear and vice versa. In this case, the tires will wear evenly, but you will have to change all your tires at once for new ones at some point! When inspecting your tires, remove all nails and stones stuck in the tread before they penetrate the tire and cause a puncture. If, when removing a nail, it turns out that it has already punctured the tire, do not touch it, mark the puncture site, replace the tire with a spare one, and repair the punctured tire as soon as possible. Regularly inspect the tire for cracks and bulges, especially on the side surfaces. Periodically remove the wheels and clean them from dirt on both sides. Inspect the wheel rims for rust or other damage. Aluminum rims are often damaged by curbs when parked: steel rims can also bend. If the damage is serious, the rim will have to be replaced. When installing new tires, they must be balanced: balancing must be repeated as the tires wear out, and also in the event of loss of balancing weights. Unbalanced wheels themselves wear out quickly and contribute to the wear of suspension and steering components. Wheel imbalance manifests itself as vibration at certain speeds, usually about 80 km per hour. If the vibration is felt only on the steering wheel, this means that only the front wheels require balancing. If the entire car vibrates, then the rear wheels are also unbalanced. Wheel balancing is performed by many workshops.

1. Tread depth - external inspection

1. Tread depth - external inspection
Branded tyres have indicator strips (B) which become visible when the tread depth decreases to 1.6 mm. The position of the indicators is indicated by triangular marks on the side of the tread (A).

2. Tread depth - manual check

2. Tread depth - manual check
Alternatively, the tread depth can be measured with a simple device known as a tread depth indicator.

3. Checking tire pressure

3. Checking tire pressure
Check your tire pressure regularly. When checking, the tires should be cold, do not check the pressure immediately after a long drive, otherwise you will get an incorrect result.
