Caution: Before working on the battery, reread the cautions in "Safety First" at the beginning of this guide.
Make sure the battery tray is in good condition and secure. Traces of corrosion on the tray, clamp and the battery itself can be removed with an aqueous solution of soda. Then rinse the treated surfaces thoroughly with water. Coat metal parts damaged by corrosion with a zinc-based primer and paint over.
Periodically (at least once every three months) Check the battery charge level as described in chapter 5A.
If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started from a foreign battery (see ch. "Repair on the road").
Battery corrosion can be minimized by lubricating the battery terminals and clamps with petroleum jelly.
1. The battery is located in the rear right corner of the luggage compartment. To access the battery, first partially remove the luggage compartment side trim by turning the trim tabs 90°counterclockwise. Then remove the battery cover from the right side of the luggage compartment.
2. Check if the cable lugs are well tightened (A) battery and whether they provide reliable electrical contact. Properly tightened lugs cannot be turned on the terminal. Then check the cable (IN) for damaged insulation and burns.
3. If there are signs of corrosion on the terminals or clamps (white loose deposits), disconnect the wires from the terminals, clean them with a wire brush and reinstall. In stores with related products, you can find special tools for cleaning the terminals.
