BMW 540i
Neutral Gear Lever (in the diagram it is shown by a dot) is on the line of inclusion of 3rd and 4th gears
When shifting from any gear to "neutral" the lever under the action of the springs itself tends to return to the named line.
When engaging fifth and sixth gears, be sure to push the lever to the right to prevent erroneous engagement of 3rd or 4th gear.
Reverse gear
The transmission can only be engaged after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Pressing the lever to the left, you need to make some effort.
Reversing lights
The lights come on when the reverse gear is engaged, if the ignition key is in position 2.
When stopping on hills, do not hold the vehicle with a slipping clutch. Use the parking brake for this. Clutch slippage causes heavy wear.
