The AGS system determines your individual driving style by assessing the position and travel of the accelerator pedal, deceleration when braking and lateral accelerations acting on the car in corners. From four different options - from exceptionally comfortable to geared towards the maximum use of the vehicle's capabilities - AGS selects the one that best suits the situation.
The system detects curves, uphills and inclines to account for driving conditions. When cornering at high speed, it does not shift to higher gears. On hills, upshifts are only performed at high engine speeds to make better use of the engine's power output. On descents, the system downshifts if it senses an increase in vehicle speed and a depressing brake pedal.
As far as road conditions are concerned, the AGS system monitors the grip coefficient between the tires and the road surface, and on snow or icy conditions it automatically switches to the winter program. For starting off, second gear is used, upshifts are performed in advance, and on descents in the mountains, despite the pressing of the brake pedal, downshifts are not performed. This allows you to feel the situation more subtly and contributes to greater driving safety. As soon as the system recognizes a road with good traction, it switches to the normal program. The winter program is also disabled if you move the AT control lever from the position "D" into position "'S", "3" or "2", and also if you turn off the ASC+T system.
The AGS system is able to determine the traffic situation, which ensures the greatest possible comfort. So, for example, it recognizes movement in "traffic jams" and leaves only the second gear engaged until it detects an increase in the power spent on acceleration.
Of course, the automatic transmission can also be operated manually. You can fully use the capabilities of the car if you move the AT control lever from the position "D" into position "S", "3" or "2". Regulations "3" And "2" limit the maximum allowable transmission. Position "2" serves, first of all, for driving on steep mountain roads, with a large load of the car.
Positions of the control lever АТ
R, R, N, D, S, 3, 2
The indication of the selected gear is different and depends on the configuration of your car (see illustrations).
Changing the position of the control lever AT
The engine can only be started when the AT control lever is set to the P or N position.
Depress the brake pedal before shifting into forward gear, as the vehicle will move slowly even at idle if this gear is engaged.
After shifting the lever to the position corresponding to the forward motion, wait until the gear is engaged, accompanied by a slight push, and only then press the accelerator pedal.
Before you exit the vehicle with the engine running, move the AT control lever to position P or N and apply the parking brake.
On the front side of the AT control lever handle there is (shown by arrow) a lock button that prevents erroneous translation growl and in some of the provisions. To unlock, press the button.
If you mistakenly move the lever to the N position while driving at high speeds, immediately release the gas. Wait until the engine reaches idle speed, and then move the lever to the desired position.
P - parking position
Turn on only after stopping the car.
R - reverse
Turn on only after the car has come to a complete stop.
N - neutral position
Switch on only during long breaks in motion. Switching on while driving is only allowed if the vehicle is in danger of skidding.
D - basic driving mode with automatic gear shifting
This position corresponds to normal driving. Automatically shifts all gears all forward gears. The functioning of the AGS system is completely unlimited.
S - sports program
With this position of the AT control lever, the AGS system uses only the sports program. AT shifts up to 4th gear (BMW 525tds up to 5th gear).
It is recommended to switch to the sports program if - regardless of the actual driving style - there is a desire to implement a gearshift mode oriented to the use of the available power reserve.
3 and 2 - driving on mountain roads and in braking mode
Activate to limit the number of working gears, for example, on steep hills or descents in the mountains. Shifts are automatic, but only up to the selected limiting gear.
In position 3, the sports program is activated.
Position 2, thanks to the appropriate selection of gear ratios, is especially convenient when towing a trailer.
The transmission downshifts with a corresponding drop in speed.
Maximum acceleration mode (Kick-Down)
Turns on when the accelerator pedal is pressed all the way. At the same time, atm downshifts for the greatest acceleration of the car.
Electronic shift control system
If the warning lamp comes on or the Check Check System displays the message "Getriebenotprogramm" (Emergency transmission control program), it means that a malfunction has occurred either in the electronics that control the switching. or in the box itself.
At the same time, the possibility of transferring the AT control lever to any of the positions remains, however, when the forward gear is turned on, the car will only move in fourth or fifth gear.
Therefore, avoiding increased loads, drive to the nearest BMW workshop.
Work in the engine compartment should never be carried out with the AT control lever in the driving position.
The rules for starting the engine by towing and from an external battery, as well as towing a faulty vehicle are set out in the Introduction.
Steptronic system*
Although your vehicle is equipped with an AT with AGS, you can still use manual gear shifting.
For manual gear shifting, move the AT control lever from the position "D" left to the M/S line. This activates the sporty gearshift program. By touching the lever in the direction "+" or you command the Steptronic system to change gears, then move the lever to the right to the position "D".
Possible selector lever positions
R, R, N, D, M/S
- Adaptive Program - D
- Sports program - S
- Manual shift - M
- Upshifting — +
- Downshifting - -
Indication of the position of the control lever AT is different depending on the vehicle configuration (see illustrations). Adaptive program (position D of the control lever АТ) will allow you to take advantage of the AGS system. An explanation of the manual changeover in M/S mode can be found below.
Changing lever position
On the front side of the AT control lever handle there is (shown by arrow) lock button that prevents erroneous shifting of the lever to positions R and P. To release the lock, press this button.
Starting the engine is only possible when the AT control lever is in position P or N.
Before engaging the forward gear, press the brake pedal, as the car, if such a gear is engaged. will move slowly even at idle.
Having moved the lever to the position corresponding to the forward motion, wait until the gear is engaged, accompanied by a slight push, and only then press the accelerator pedal. If you want to get out of the car without turning off the engine, then move the AT control lever to position P or N and tighten the parking brake.
If you mistakenly move the lever to the N position while driving at high speeds, immediately release the gas. Wait until the engine reaches idle speed, and then move the lever to the desired position.
P - parking position
Turn on only after the car has come to a complete stop. Drive wheels are blocked.
R - reverse gear
Turn on only after stopping the car.
N - neutral position
Turn on only during long breaks in movement. Switching on while driving is only allowed if there is a risk of the vehicle skidding.
D - basic driving mode with automatic gear shifting
Corresponds to the normal mode of movement. All forward gears are automatically switched. The AGS system is operational.
Maximum acceleration mode (Kick-Down)
For fast acceleration, the accelerator pedal can be depressed past the full throttle position. In this case, the point of increased resistance must be passed.
M/S - Manual mode and sports program
When changing from D mode to M/S mode, the sport program is activated, as indicated by the appearance of the letter S in the indicator of the selected gearshift program.
In position S, the AGS system uses only the sportiest shift program. AT will only shift up to 4th gear, it is recommended to switch to the sports program if, regardless of the actual driving style, there is a desire to implement a gearshift mode focused on using the available power reserve.
If you move the lever forward in the direction "+", then the box shifts to an increased gear, and when the lever is moved in the direction "-" she downshifts. At the same time, the first touch causes a changeover to manual control.
On the indicator of the selected gear, depending on the vehicle configuration, 1... 5 or M1... M5 is displayed.
Illegal upshifts or downshifts are ignored. for example, downshifts at too high engine speeds are not performed. The selected gear appears briefly on the instrument panel. When several shifts are carried out in succession, the most recently selected invalid gear is displayed for a short time. The currently engaged gear is then displayed.
When driving in manual mode, to accelerate from 4th or 5th gear at low speed - for example, when overtaking - downshifting must be done manually or using the function "Kick-Down".
Switching from M to P, R, N is only possible via position D.
System "Stepuonic" thinks for you in the following situations:
- To prevent the engine speed from reaching unacceptable values shortly before the speed is reached. limited by the regulator, an upshift is performed.
- At low speeds, downshifting occurs without your intervention.
The use of the maximum acceleration function causes a shift to the lowest gear possible at a given speed. Depending on the situation, for example in winter conditions, starting off can be carried out in 2nd or 3rd gear.
Electronic shift control system
If the warning lamp comes on or the Check Check System displays the message "Getnebenotprogramm" (Emergency transmission control program), it means that a malfunction has occurred either in the electronics that control the switching, or in the box itself.
At the same time, it remains possible to transfer the AT control lever to any of the positions, however, when the forward gear is turned on, the car will only move in fourth or fifth gear
Therefore, avoiding increased loads, drive to the nearest BMW workshop.
Under no circumstances should work in the engine compartment be carried out with the AT control lever in the driving position.
The rules for starting the engine by towing from an external battery, as well as towing a disabled vehicle, are presented in the Introduction to the Guide.
