Electronic Damping Control (EDC) and ride height adjustment (BMW 5 Series E39)

The system automatically provides the necessary shock absorption of the chassis at any time, contributing to greater vehicle comfort and driving safety.

Automatic adjustment

Automatic adjustment is activated after each engine start. It remains in effect in all speed ranges of the vehicle and under any load. If driving conditions change (road surface conditions, turning, braking, etc.), then the damping force is automatically adjusted to the changed conditions within a fraction of a second.

Sports program

To turn it on, turn the ignition key to position 2 and press the EDC button (shown by arrow). The indicator light next to the letter S will light up.

You should turn on the sports program if you prefer a sporty driving style in any operating conditions.

Switching to automatic adjustment: Press the key again, the control lamp will go out

Ground clearance adjustment

The regulator, installed on the rear axle, ensures constant ground clearance under any vehicle load.



For this purpose, pneumatic shock absorbers are installed on the rear axle instead of conventional shock absorbers and steel springs. The electronic control system determines the actual height of the body above the road using two sensors and, if necessary, connects a compressor that pumps compressed air into the struts.
