Removal and installation the oil cooler (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Remove the crankcase guard.

2. Drain the coolant (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

3. Remove the oil filter housing.

When removing the oil filter housing, the remaining coolant flows from the oil cooler into the engine oil pan, so to avoid engine damage due to coolant getting into the engine oil, you should change the engine oil after completing the work.


4. Cover the generator to prevent contamination.

5. Unscrew the oil cooler mounting bolts (1) and remove it from the oil filter housing (2). If necessary, reposition the cooling system hose.

6. Replace the profile gaskets on the oil filter housing.

7. Clean the mating surfaces of the engine crankcase, oil filter housing and oil cooler.

8. Install the removed components in the reverse order of their removal.

9. Change the engine oil (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).
