Removal and installation the starter. Models 316i, 318i (BMW 3 Series E36)

The starter is located on the side of the junction of the engine and gearbox and is removed upward.

Removal

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".

On 530i, 535i, 524td, 525tds models: Disconnect the battery terminal at the bulkhead connector.

Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the section "Removing and installing the battery".

Remove the air filter cover and air flow meter.



Disconnect hoses "2" of oil dipstick "2" by releasing clamp "3".

Release the upper hose clamps.



Remove the idle speed control valve from the rubber "arrow" mount.



Unscrew bolt "4" securing the oil dipstick.

Pull out the oil dipstick guide tube.



Unscrew the cable channel under the intake manifold.



Unscrew the "arrow" nut.



Mark with tape and disconnect the wires from the starter.



Loosen the top starter bolt while pushing the water hose down.



Remove bolt "5".



Unscrew and remove the lower mounting bolt.

Pull out the starter.



Check the integrity of the starter pinion and the starter ring gear.

Installation

The starter is installed in the reverse order. Do not forget to install the gasket washers of the mounting bolts.

Install the oil dipstick guide tube with a new O-ring.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Attention: Connect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the electronic control unit of the injection device may be damaged.

Set the time on the clock.

Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
