Removal and installation the generator: four-cylinder gasoline engine (BMW 3 Series E36)
Removal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".
Remove the air filter cover and air flow meter.
Unload and remove the V-belt.
Remove the protective cover of the generator connection block.

Remove the wires from the B+ (terminal 30) and D+ (terminal 61) contacts. Unscrew the ground wire (terminal 31).

Models 316i/318i produced since September 1993: Loosen the idler pulley.

Models 3l6i/318i produced since September 1993: Loosen the generator mounting bolts, pull out the generator.

316i/318i models built before August 1993: Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.
Installation
Check the generator suspension bushings and replace if necessary.
Insert the generator and secure with bolts.
Connect the electrical wires to the generator: B+ (terminal 30) and D+ (terminal 61) and the ground wire (terminal 31).
316i/318i models produced since September 1993: Screw on the idler pulley.
Apply and tighten the V-belt.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Attention: Connect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the electronic control unit of the injection device may be damaged.
Set the time on the clock.
Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
