Removal and installation the generator: six-cylinder diesel engine (BMW 3 Series E36)
Removal
Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".
Raise the car.
Unscrew the engine protective pan.
Unload and remove the ribbed V-belt.
Unscrew the oil filter cover and remove the filter element.
Unscrew the oil line mounting bracket from the generator. Unscrew the oil hose from the bottom of the oil filter.
Caution: Oil is leaking, place a rag underneath.
Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the power steering expansion tank and set the tank with the hoses connected aside.
Release the expansion tank of the cooling system from the clamp and put the tank with the connected hoses aside.
To provide access to the generator, unscrew the bolts securing the pressure sensor and the EGR check valve.

Remove the protective cover of the generator connection block. Remove the wires from the B+ contact (terminal 30) and D+ (terminal 61).

Loosen the generator mounting bolts and remove the generator.
Installation
Check the generator suspension bushings and replace them if necessary. The generator is easier to insert if you first move the bushings forward a little.
Insert the generator and secure with bolts.
Connect the electrical wires to the generator: B+ (terminal 30) and D+ (terminal 61).
Apply and tighten the ribbed V-belt.
Insert the oil filter element and screw on the oil filter cover.
Attach the oil line mounting bracket to the generator. Screw the oil hose to the oil filter.
Fill the engine with oil.
Install expansion tanks for the power steering and cooling system.
Install the EGR pressure sensor and check valve.
Install the engine compartment protective tray.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Attention: Connect the battery with the ignition off, otherwise the electronic control unit of the injection device may be damaged.
Set the time on the clock.
Set the security code for the radio receiver, see section "Setting the radio receiver code".
