Removal and installation the water pump (BMW 3 Series E36)
The water pump is driven by a V-belt. The radiator fan is mounted on the front shaft.
Drain the coolant from the engine.
Remove the V-belt.
Remove the fan.
Loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts. While doing this, hold and press the V-belt so that the pulley does not turn. Remove the belt pulley from the hub.
Unscrew the 4 belt pulley mounting bolts. On a six-cylinder engine, unscrew the nuts instead of the bolts shown.
Screw 2 bolts with M6 thread into the threaded holes "arrows", uniformly pressing the water pump away from the engine. Do not allow the pump to tilt. The figure shows a six-cylinder engine. On a 4-cylinder engine, do the same, but here the threaded holes are located vertically, see "arrows" in figure W 1841.
Remove the release bolts. Replace the water pump O-ring and coat with silicone grease.
Install the water pump with a new gasket and tighten the bolts evenly. The tightening torque depends on the bolt thread size: M6 thread: 10 Nm; thread M8: 20 Nm.
Loosen the tension pin of the timing belt tensioner without disturbing the free rotation of the water pump.
Screw on the belt pulley, tightening the 4 bolts to a torque of 10 Nm.
Install and tension the V-belt.
Install the radiator with fan.
Fill the engine with coolant and remove air from the cooling system.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
