Water pump — removal and installation (BMW 7 Series E32)
The water pump is driven by a poly V-belt. A fan is screwed onto the water pump shaft at the front.
Elements of the water pump of the M30 engine
1 - water pump;
2 — flange;
3 - retaining ring;
4 — bearing;
5 - Hex bolt;
6 - spring washer;
7 — pump body;
8 - gasket;
9 — oil seal;
10 - safety ring;
11 — impeller;
12 — pump repair kit.
Drain the coolant.
Remove the poly V-belt.
Remove the radiator.
Unscrew the bolts securing the poly V-belt pulley. In doing so, hold the pulley by putting the belt on it so that it does not turn. Remove the poly V-belt pulley from the hub.
Remove the four water pump mounting bolts. On 6-cylinder petrol engines, nuts are used instead of bolts.
Screw two M6 threaded bolts into the threaded holes (arrows), and thus press the water pump away from the engine. Then make sure that the pump does not tilt. In a diesel engine, the threaded holes for pressing the pump are located vertically.
Remove the screws used to press the pump, replace the water pump O-ring and lubricate the new O-ring with silicone grease or petroleum jelly.
Install the pump with a new gasket and tighten the bolts evenly. The tightening torque is determined by the thread diameter of the bolts: bolts with M6 thread - 10 Nm, bolts M8 - 20 Nm.
Install the pulley and tighten the four bolts securing it to a torque of 10 Nm.
Install the poly V-belt and tighten it.
Install the radiator with fan.
Fill the cooling system with coolant and bleed the air.
Warm up the engine and check the tightness of the hose connections and the water pump.
The water pump is located on the front of the engine.
Drain the coolant.
Remove the fan. To do this, hold the belt pulley with a device and unscrew the union nut (1). When installing, tighten the nut with a force of 30 Nm.
Remove the fan from the shaft.
Remove the water pump drive belt.
Unscrew the damper from its hub.
Using an old V-belt to hold the drive wheel in place, remove the four bolts.
Disconnect the water hoses. Loosen the pump mounting bolts.
Install three bolts as shown in the picture and push the pump away from the engine block.
A leaky, noisy pump should be replaced
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
