Removal and installation the water pump (BMW 5 Series E34)

Removal



Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Drain the coolant from the engine.

Remove the fan.

Loosen the belt pulley mounting bolts. While doing this, hold and press the V-belt so that the pulley does not turn.

Remove the V-belt.

Loosen the 4 belt pulley mounting bolts and remove the belt pulley from the hub.

Pull the timing belt cover upward.

Compress the tension spring of the timing belt tensioner and wedge the tension pin with the BMW 115010 tool; if necessary, you can make such a clamp yourself.

Loosen and move back the hose clamps. Disconnect the water hoses from the pump.

Unscrew 3 mounting bolts (on M40/M50/M51 engines - 4 bolts) and remove the water pump.

Engine M50: Screw 2 bolts with M6 thread into the threaded holes "arrows", uniformly pressing the water pump away from the engine. Do not allow the pump to tilt. On the 4-cylinder M40 engine, do the same, but here the threaded holes are located vertically.

Installation



All engines except M50: Completely remove any remaining sealant from the surfaces with a scraper.
M50 Engine: Remove the release bolts. Replace the water pump O-ring and coat with silicone grease.

Install the water pump with a new gasket and tighten the bolts evenly to 22 Nm.

Loosen the tension pin of the timing belt tensioner without disturbing the free rotation of the water pump.

Install the timing belt guard.

Connect the water hoses and secure them with clamps.

Screw on the belt pulley.

Install and tension the V-belt.

Tighten the belt pulley mounting bolts to a torque of 9 Nm, holding the pulley from turning with a V-belt.

Install the fan.

Fill the engine with coolant.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Warm up the engine and check the tightness of the water pump and hose connections.
