Removal and installation the water pump (BMW 7 Series E38)

Models with M60 engine

1. Drain the coolant (see section Replacing the coolant Chapters Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

2. Remove the torsional vibration damper (see chapter Engine).

3. If necessary, disconnect the additional air supply pipes (see chapter Fuel and exhaust systems).



4. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the pulley.

5. Remove the cooling system hose between the expansion tank and the water pump.

6. Disconnect the cooling system hose from the thermostat housing cover, remove the thermostat housing cover and the thermostat itself (see section Removal and installation the thermostat).



7. Remove the bolts and water pump.

8. When installing, check the correct position of the centering bushings. Clean the sealing surfaces, replace the gasket.



9. Finally, bleed the cooling system and check for leaks (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

Models with M67 engine

1. Remove the lower engine and gearbox trim covers.

2. Remove the top engine cover and fan shroud (see section Removal and installation the fan shroud).

3. Remove the torsional vibration damper (see chapter Engine).



4. Disconnect the vacuum hose (1), disconnect the connector (2) of the control valves, loosen the clamp (3) and disconnect the connector (4) from the dual thermal switch.



5. Unscrew the bolts (1) and move the control valve block (2) to the side.



6. Press the water hose clamps (1 and 2), disconnect them and set them aside.







7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.

8. Carefully remove the water pump in the direction indicated by the arrow.





9. Remove the bolts (1) and move the thermostat (2) to the new water pump.

Replace the thermostat sealing ring when installing.

10. Disconnect the cooling system pipe (1) and move the dual temperature sensor (2) to the new water pump.

When installing, replace the sealing rings in the pump body and on the temperature sensor.



11. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. To avoid damaging the new seals, carefully slide the water pump onto the tongue (1). Pay attention to the position of the clamp (2).





12. Note the different lengths of the water pump mounting bolts.

13. At the end of the installation, fill the cooling system and bleed it (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

Models with M73 engine

1. On cylinder bank 1-6, remove the one-way valve of the exhaust emission control system (see chapter Exhaust systems).

2. Remove the heat shields from the left side of the front axle beam.

3. Remove the coolant drain plug from the left side of the cylinder block.

4. Drain the coolant (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).

5. Remove the expansion tank (see section Removal and installation the expansion tank).

6. Remove the fan shroud (see section Removal and installation the fan shroud).

7. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt (see chapter Engine).



8. Unscrew the bolt, disconnect the coolant pipe from the water pump and remove the pipe.





9. Loosen the clamp and remove the sleeve.



10. Release the clamp (1) and remove the coolant supply hose to the radiator expansion tank.



11. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor wiring connector.

12. Remove the fan impeller.

13. Unscrew the bolts and remove the coolant pump drive belt pulley (see illustration).

14. Remove the torsional vibration damper (see chapter Engine).



15. Release the clamp (1) and remove the bleed hose, loosen the hose clamp on the water pump.

16. Unscrew the mounting bolts (see illustration).



17. Screw the three bolts into the specially designed threaded holes and evenly press the water pump away from the engine.

18. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Replace the sealing rings.
