Removal and installation accessory drive belts (BMW 7 Series E38)
If you intend to continue using the belt being removed, mark the direction of its movement.

1. Remember the belt routing pattern on the pulleys.
Generator drive belt
1. Remove the cooling system fan drive coupling together with the impeller (see chapter Engine cooling, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems).

2. After loosening the bolts (1), loosen the belt tension and remove the belt (2).
If it is necessary to remove the tensioner completely, unscrew bolts 1 and 2.
3. Check the condition of the belt (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance) and replace it if necessary.
4. Place the drive belt on the pulleys and rollers and make sure it is positioned correctly.
When installing a belt that has already been used, maintain its previous direction of movement.

5. Move the belt tensioner adjusting plate by the hexagon (1) to the end of the groove (2) and tighten the bolt (3).
A/C compressor drive belt
1. Remove the alternator drive belt.

2. Loosen the nuts (2 and 3) and remove the belt.
3. Check the condition of the belt (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance) and replace it if necessary.
4. Place the drive belt on the pulleys and rollers and make sure it is positioned correctly.
When installing a belt that has already been used, maintain its previous direction of movement.
5. Move the belt tensioner adjusting bar by the hexagon (1) to the end of the groove and tighten nuts (3) and (2) in sequence.
