For removal and installation of oil seals, it is recommended to use special tools. To access the front oil seal located in the lower timing chain cover, remove the vibration damper. The procedure for gaining access to the rear oil seal is described below.
1. Remove the manual transmission together with the clutch or AT (see chapter Manual gearbox and clutch or automatic transmission).
2. Drain the engine oil (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).
3. Remove the flywheel (see Section Removal and installation of a flywheel).
4. Turn out fixing bolts.
5. Turn out bolts of fastening of a cover of a back epiploon of a cranked shaft. Separate the crankcase gasket from the rear oil seal cover and remove the cover.
The rear oil seal cover is supplied with the oil seal. If necessary, the gland can be removed and installed in the cover using a special tool
6. Replace gasket. Apply Hylomar SQ32 Spezial to the crankcase joints.
7. Install tool No. 11 2 390 on the crankshaft. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil and place the stuffing box cover in its original place, then carefully remove tool No. 11 2 390.
8. If the rear oil seal cover bolt holes are blocked, use hex head bolts, paying attention to their length. Otherwise, use bar-head bolts with new washers.
