Removal and installation, checking of the oil pump (BMW 3 Series E36)
Discontinued, models 316i, 318i produced before August 1993. (Engine M40)
Note: Since removing the oil pump requires a lot of preparatory work and is rarely done, it is recommended that this work be carried out at a BMW service station. To check the operation of the relief valve, it is sufficient to first remove the oil pan.
Remove the timing belt.

Unscrew the vibration damper "1" (bolts "3") from the crankshaft. In this case, engage 5th gear, tighten the handbrake and thereby block the engine.
Loosen bolt "5". Remove toothed pulley "4" from the crankshaft.
Caution: The bolt is tightened with a high tightening torque. When loosening the bolt, have the assistant press the brake pedal so that the engine does not turn.
Remove key "7" from the crankshaft and remove ring "8".

Remove all timing belt guide rollers from the engine block cover.
Remove the water pump.
Remove the oil pan.
Unscrew the pulse sensor from the cover.

Unscrew all the bolts securing the cover "arrow" and remove the cover.
Remove 4 bolts from the back of the cover and remove the oil pump gears.
Examination
Clean and check the oil pump. If there are signs of wear on the gears and pump housing, measure the pump and replace it if necessary. Specified values: radial clearance of the outer rotor in the pump housing: max. 0.2 mm; axial clearance of inner rotor: max. 0.065 mm; outer rotor: max 0.1 mm.
Release the locking ring on the cover and remove the safety valve "6" (Figure W 1059). Measure the length of the spring without load, replace if necessary. Specified value: 84.1 mm.
Insert the safety valve, install the retaining ring.
Lubricate the rotors with engine oil and insert. Tighten the oil pump cover with a tightening torque of 10 Nm.
Installation
Be sure to replace the cover gasket and the crankshaft O-ring.
Install the cover with a new gasket and tighten the bolts evenly. The tightening torque depends on the bolt thread size: bolts with M6 thread: 10 Nm; bolts with M8 thread: 20 Nm.
Lubricate the new crankshaft oil seal with engine oil and carefully push it in until it stops using a short tube. The inner and outer diameters of the tube must match the dimensions of the oil seal. BMW service stations use tool 112320 for this purpose.
Place the ring on the crankshaft, insert the key and put on the toothed pulley.
Screw in bolt "5" with washer (Drawing W 1630). In this case, the protrusion of the washer should face the toothed pulley.
Tighten bolt "5" to a torque of 310 Nm.
Warning: Requires powerful tool. Engage 5th gear and have assistant press brake pedal to prevent engine from turning.
Screw on the vibration damper, tightening the 6 bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Install the pulse sensor.
Install the water pump.
Install the timing pulleys and timing belt.
Install the oil pan.
Fill the engine with oil and coolant.
Connect the ground wire to the battery.
Start the engine and let it run at idle speed, adding gas if necessary. No later than 10 seconds later, the oil pressure warning light on the dashboard should go out, otherwise, find and fix the fault using the engine lubrication system fault diagnostic table.
Removal, models 320i, 325i, 32Bi
Unscrew and tilt the oil pan. The oil pan can only be removed with the engine removed and the oil pump removed.

Unscrew the nut, remove the oil pump sprocket with the chain. At the same time, relieve the chain tensioner (squeeze it out).
Note: The nut has a left-hand thread, i.e. when unscrewing, turn it to the right.

Unscrew the oil pump "arrow" bolts. Do not lose the 2 centering bushings for subsequent installation.
Pull the oil pan back.
Examination

Disassemble and clean the oil pump: Unscrew the inlet pipe (bolts "13"). Do not lose the 2 centering bushings "4". Check the rotors "2" and "3" for wear and scratches. Specified values: Radial clearance of the outer rotor in the pump housing: max. 0.18 mm; axial play of inner rotor: max 0.08 mm; outer rotor max. 0.09 mm.
Release the locking ring on the cover and remove the safety valve "6" (see picture). Measure the length of the spring without load, replace if necessary. Specified value; 84.1 mm.
Attention: It is necessary to replace the ring of the steep section "8". Carefully insert the safety valve, secure with a retaining ring. Screw on the inlet pipe with a new gasket, the protrusion of the gasket should face the inlet box.
Lubricate all parts with engine oil. Tighten the oil pump cover with a tightening torque of 10 Nm.
Installation
Install the oil pan with the oil pump.
Insert the oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm. There should be 2 centering bushings between the engine block and the oil pump housing. Insert the sprocket with the chain on and tighten the nut (left hand thread) with a tightening torque of 20 Nm. If removed, install a chain tensioner.
Screw on the oil sump.
