Removal and installation, checking of the vacuum pump (BMW 5 Series E34)

            0

Table of contents: Examination ↓ Removal, model 524td ↓ Installation ↓
The vacuum pump is located on a 2.4-liter diesel engine under the cylinder head cover, and on a 2.5-liter diesel engine on the side of the cylinder head and is driven by the camshaft. The pump creates the vacuum necessary for the operation of the brake booster, since, unlike a gasoline engine, there is not enough vacuum in the intake manifold of a diesel engine.

Caution: Do not start the engine without a vacuum pump.

Examination

Connect a vacuum gauge to the vacuum pump and start the engine.

The vacuum pump must create a vacuum of at least 530 mbar.

Removal, model 524td

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Turn the crankshaft and thus the camshaft until the vacuum pump cam on the camshaft reaches the lower position.

Caution: Do not turn the camshaft by the toothed pulley.

Caution: Do not turn the camshaft by the toothed pulley.

Unscrew 4 nuts and remove the vacuum pump.

Installation

Installation

Position the vacuum pump so that the pipe is at the back and the cam fits into the recess of the pusher.

Insert sealing ring 4. Check its integrity beforehand, see also figure W - 1095.

Install the cylinder head cover; if necessary, replace the gasket.
