The new engine design, which appeared on other BMW models in 1987, has one intake and exhaust valve per cylinder. The camshaft, driven through a toothed belt drive, controls the valves using rocker arms supported by valve clearance compensators. Compensators keep the valve clearances constant so that clearance adjustment is not required. To increase the stability of the exhaust valves, they are filled with sodium.
Attention: Follow the rules for disposal.
The lubrication system works with a so-called bicentric oil pump located in the timing case cover and operating directly from the crankshaft.
Ignition and fuel injection are controlled by the Motronic system.
