Removal and installation the exhaust gas turbocharger (BMW 5 Series E34)

Removal

See Figure W-1098.

Remove the hose going to the air collector, having first released and moved the clamps.

Remove the air hose going to the air filter, having first released and moved the clamps.

Unscrew the exhaust pipe mounting nuts from studs 2.

Mark the position of the tube clamp 13 with a felt-tip pen and unscrew the clamp.

Unscrew and close oil lines 3 and 6.

Loosen the 4 turbocharger mounting bolts and remove the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold.

Installation

Check the flatness of the adjacent surface.

Install the turbocharger and tighten it to the exhaust manifold with new bolts to a tightening torque of 25 Nm.

Check the integrity of the 4/7 O-rings on the oil lines and replace if necessary.

Tighten oil line 3 from top and bottom with a tightening torque of 22 Nm.

Tighten oil line 6 with a hexagon socket head bolt to a tightening torque of 40 Nm.

Tighten the tube clamp in accordance with the markings made.

Screw on the exhaust pipe with new self-locking nuts. First coat the studs with copper paste so that they can be unscrewed later. First tighten the nuts to a torque of 30 Nm, and then tighten to a tightening torque of 50 Nm.

Connect the air hoses and secure them with clamps.
