Be sure to read the safety instructions before removing the airbag unit.
Withdrawal
1. Disconnect the negative cable (-) battery with the ignition off. The battery is located in the trunk behind the lid on the right side. In the BMW 316i, 318i, the battery is located in the engine compartment.
When the battery is disconnected, the fault memory data of individual devices is erased. If necessary, read the memory data before disconnecting the battery. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. It is desirable to carry out work in the conditions of a service station.
2. Unlock the steering column and pull out the steering wheel as far as possible and set it to its lowest position.
3. Turn the steering wheel 90° (1/4 turn) from the middle position so that the spokes are vertical.
4. Turn away the top screw of fastening of a steering wheel -1- behind Torx T30 screw-driver -2-. A socket wrench can be used to loosen the screw. Turn steering wheel 180° (1/2 turn) and completely unscrew the second airbag mounting screw. The screws remain in the steering wheel.
5. Slightly pry the airbag unit with a screwdriver. Push in the airbag connector retainer and disconnect the connector. If equipped, disconnect the multifunction steering wheel connector.
6. Remove the airbag unit and place it with the soft side up, for example, in the trunk.
Installation
7. Check if the negative cable is disconnected (-) battery.
8. Fix a socket of the block of an airbag so that click was heard. If there is a connector for the multifunction steering wheel, dock it.
9. Reinstall the airbag unit and secure it to the back of the steering wheel with a torque of 2 Nm with a HAZET -6108 -1 CT torque wrench and a 2223 -T30 head. When doing this, make sure that the cable is not pinched.
During the disconnection of the battery, no people are allowed in the car.
10. Connect the negative cable (-) battery with the ignition off, set the time on the clock.
