Removal and installation the fan/fan shroud (BMW 3 Series E46)
Removal

1. Remove the intake air guide by removing the clamp with a small screwdriver (arrows in the illustration).
320i
2. Remove the suction pipe at the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation systems), for what open the clamp, refer to Section Removal and installation the intake manifold.

3. The diesel engine has a radiator shutter with a pneumatic drive, located behind the fan. Disconnect the vacuum hose "1" from the vacuum box. Remove the drive rod from the shutter, for which remove the clamp "2" on the side.
4. Remove rivet "3" with a small screwdriver.
5. Models 320i, 323i, 328i with air conditioning: Remove the viscous fan, refer to Section Removal and installation a fan with a viscous coupling.

6. Disconnect connector "1" of the electric fan to the right of the radiator.
7. Remove screw "2".

8. Remove the rivet at point "1" on the left. The rivet is not shown in the illustration.
9 Lightly push the fan shroud back at the top center and release the guide bar. Pull the fan shroud and impeller upwards together.

10. Models 320d: Remove screw "1" and four other screws securing the fan shutter and remove it from the fan housing.
11. If necessary, unscrew the three screws securing the fan casing and remove the electric motor.
Installation
12. Secure the fan motor to the casing with three screws.
13. Models 320d: Secure the fan louvers to the shroud with screws.
14. Insert the fan shroud from the top so that both lower mounting strips fit into the ears on the fan.

15. Fasten the fan shroud with a rivet on the left side of the radiator. Replace damaged clamps.

16. Screw in screw "2" on the right side of the radiator.
17. Connect the electric fan connector and secure it.

18. Models 320d: Connect the vacuum hose "1" to the vacuum box. Connect the drive rod to the radiator shutter lever and secure with the clamp "2". Insert the rivet "3".
19 Models 320d: Connect the suction hose to the EGR valve and secure with a clamp.
20. Insert the intake air guide, insert the rivet and secure with pins.
