Removal and installation the coolant pump (BMW 3 Series E46)

The coolant pump is driven by a V-belt. 320i, 323i, 328i with air conditioning: A fan is mounted on the front of the coolant pump shaft.

Removal



1. Drain the coolant, refer to Section Replacing the coolant.

2. Remove the V-belt, refer to Section Removal, installation and tensioning the V-belt.

3. Loosen the pulley mounting bolts. While doing this, hold the pulley from turning. Remove the pulley from the hub.

4. Remove the 4 coolant pump mounting bolts.

5. Screw 2 M6 screws into the threaded hole (arrows in the illustration) and thus remove the coolant pump evenly from the engine. Make sure that the pump is not tilted.

Installation



6. Clean the sealing surfaces on the engine.

7. Remove the removal bolts from the pump.

8. Replace the pump O-ring and lubricate the new ring with slip compound before installation.

9. Insert the pump with the new seal and tighten it evenly. The tightening torque depends on the thread diameter. Refer to Specifications.

10. Secure the pulley by tightening the 4 bolts to a torque of 15 Nm.

11. Install the V-belt, refer to Section Removal, installation and tensioning the V-belt.



12. Fill the system with coolant, refer to Section Replacing the coolant.

13. Start and warm up the engine. Check the cooling system for leaks.

14. Drain the coolant, refer to Section Replacing the coolant.

15. Remove the V-belt, refer to Section Removal, installation and tensioning the V-belt.

16. Unscrew the coolant hose from the top of the pump at the cylinder head and holder.

17. Disconnect pump "1" and remove it together with the sealing gasket "2". In doing so, pay attention to the position of both guide bushings "3".
