Removal and installation the coolant pump (BMW 5 Series E39)
The coolant pump is driven by a poly V-belt. The radiator fan is bolted to the coolant pump shaft at the front.
Drain the coolant, see section "Maintenance work".
Remove the poly V-belt.
Remove the radiator.
Loosen the bolts securing the poly V-belt pulley. Compress the belt to prevent the pulley from turning. Remove the poly V-belt pulley from the hub.
Remove 4 bolts securing the coolant pump. For a 6-cylinder 6-cylinder engine, loosen the nuts instead of the bolts shown.
Screw 2 M6 bolts into the threaded holes "arrows" to evenly press the pump body away from the engine. Make sure that the pump is not tilted. The figure shows the pump of a 6-cylinder engine. In a diesel engine, the threaded holes are located in a vertical plane opposite each other, see arrows in the figure W1841.
Remove the removal bolts, replace the coolant pump O-ring and lubricate it with standard silicone grease or petroleum jelly.
Insert the pump with a new seal and tighten the fastening evenly. The tightening torque of the bolts depends on the thread diameter: M6 - 10 Nm; M8 — 20 Nm.
Tighten the 4 belt pulley mounting bolts to 10 Nm.
Install and tension the poly V-belt.
Install a radiator with a fan.
Fill the coolant and bleed the cooling system, see section "Maintenance work".
Warm up the engine and check the tightness of the hose connections and the coolant pump.
