Self-diagnosis display (BMW 5 Series E28)

Self-diagnosis display


Error messages appear as text - instructions and warnings, simultaneously with a buzzer sound. Error messages have three levels of importance.

Meaning/Help

Bremsflussigkeit

Brake fluid

The fluid level has dropped to the minimum. Top up at the first opportunity - see Chapter Routine car maintenance.

Oildruck Motor

Engine oil pressure

Have your BMW service technician determine the cause of the brake fluid loss and fix it. Too low. Stop immediately and switch off the engine. Refer to the fault diagnosis in Chapter Brake system.

Handbremse losen

Release the handbrake

Appears after the start of movement.

Kein Bremslicht

Brake lights not working

The bulbs or fuses are burnt out, replace the bulbs or fuses (Chapter On-board electrical equipment system).

Bremsli Elektrik

Electrics of brake lights

Brake lights do not light - fuses or electrical circuit are faulty; replace fuses (Chapter On-board electrical equipment system) or contact BMW service.

Niveauregelung*

Ground clearance adjustment *

The vehicle is overloaded or the ride height control system is defective; reduce the load or contact BMW service (max speed: 170 km/h).




* Alternating with indication "Niveauregelung" ("Ground clearance adjustment") a warning appears "max. 170 km/h" ("Max. 170 km/h"), if this speed is exceeded. The warning will go out when the speed decreases.


SPEED LIMIT* - MAXIMUM SPEED.

The indication appears when the prescribed speed limit is exceeded. Observe traffic regulations.

These faults are immediately signaled with a buzzer and a flashing light with the indicator sign (1).

If several faults occur simultaneously, they are displayed sequentially.

Messages are stored until the fault is corrected and cannot be reset by pressing the key self-diagnosis display (2).

If it has dropped below the norm, top it up at the first opportunity (refer to Chapter Routine car maintenance).

One lamp is burnt out (refer to Chapter On-board electrical equipment system).

Abblendlicht

Low beam

The lamp or fuse is burnt out or the electrical circuit is faulty (refer to Chapter On-board electrical equipment system).

Kennzeichlicht

License plate light

Anhangerkicht*

Trailer lights*

Trailer light fuse or circuit faulty; replace the fuse (Chapter On-board electrical equipment system).




The message appears when turning the key in the ignition switch to position 2 (if there are faults of severity level 1, they appear automatically). After the messages on the display go out, the information availability signs remain. If a plus sign appears (3) - call them by pressing key 2.

Using the self-diagnosis display key, messages entered into the memory can be suppressed until they are automatically erased or, conversely, messages indicated by the information availability sign can be recalled from the memory accordingly.

Oelstand Motor*

Oil level

The engine oil level has dropped to a minimum. Check the oil level, top up as soon as possible (for example, when refueling) - see ChapterRoutine car maintenance.

Kuhlwasserstand

Coolant level

Coolant level is below normal. Top up at the first opportunity - see Chapter Routine car maintenance.

Sensor Oelstand*

Oil level sensor*

The oil level sensor is faulty. Refer to the Chapter materials Routine car maintenance.

If the sensor is faulty, the low oil level will not be indicated until repairs are carried out!

Check-Control

Self-diagnosis display

Electronics fault, various messages are not displayed as a result. Contact BMW service for assistance as soon as possible.

Licht an?*

Is the light on?*

Message at the end of the movement (after opening the driver's door).

Bitte angurten*

Fasten seat belts*

This message may appear along with a warning light* or a buzzer*.


The message appears for the first time only at the end of the trip when the ignition key is turned to position 0 (when there are several messages, there is a sequential indication - messages of importance level 3 follow messages of importance levels 2 and 1). In this case, the message can still be called up for approximately three minutes after the end of the journey using the display button, even if the key is removed from the ignition and the display has gone out. The message also appears before the start of the journey when the key in the ignition is turned to position 2. The text goes out after a short time (with the start of the movement) and the information availability sign is not displayed. New messages appear only after turning the key to position 0. When the plus sign appears, call up the existing messages by pressing the self-diagnosis display key.



General information: If the inscription appears "Betriebsanleitung" ("User Manual"), please follow the instructions given above.

Inscription "Betriebsanleitung" can be turned off by pressing the self-diagnosis display key.

Checking the display for proper operation (if there are no messages) - turn the key in the ignition switch to position 2, press key 2 - the message CHECK CONTROL OK should appear (SELF-DIAGNOSTIC DISPLAY IS CORRECT).
