Manual transmission (BMW 5 Series E28)
The neutral position of the gearshift lever (point) is in the plane of switching third/fourth gear. When switching from any gear to the neutral position, the lever automatically returns to its original position. All gears are synchronized.
When the vehicle is stopped and the gearshift lever is moved to the left, a slight resistance should be overcome.
Lights up when the ignition is on and reverse gear is engaged.

If the engine speed is exceeded in fifth gear - 5000 rpm for vehicles with a forced-ignition internal combustion engine and 3800 rpm for vehicles with a diesel engine - then switching to the fourth gear of the gearbox is not allowed - there is a risk of engine damage.
Reverse gear
When the vehicle is stopped and the gearshift lever is moved to the left, a slight resistance should be overcome.
Reversing light
Lights up when the ignition is on and reverse gear is engaged.
On hills, do not practice braking the car by not fully engaging the clutch; use the parking brake. Not fully engaging the clutch causes increased wear.
