Master Key (BMW 5 Series E28)

            0

The key in the infrared transmitter is the main key. All remote control functions can be duplicated by ordinary keys.

Batteries - replace if the LED does not flash when you press one of the buttons and the locks do not work.

Batteries - replace if the LED does not flash when you press one of the buttons and the locks do…

Lift the cover by the recess using a screwdriver (arrow).

Unscrew the screw (arrow) and remove the cover.

The battery type and its installation position are shown on the bottom of the corresponding slot.

Use only batteries of the specified type.

Restoring transmitter function

After replacing the battery, it is necessary to restore the remote control function of the transmitter (this is not required if it lasted less than one minute and no buttons were pressed during that time). The same thing needs to be done if you received a new transmitter (for example, when replacing a defective one):
  • close the driver's door, turn the key in the ignition switch for max. 5 seconds to position 1 and return it back to position 0;
  • press button 1 (see illustration) on the transmitter and hold it in this position. Press button 2 three times in a row within 10 seconds; while doing this, do not release button 1.
  • release button 1, the LED will flash slowly for max 10 seconds;
  • bring the transmitter to the receiver located under the interior rearview mirror (as close as possible, maximum 15 cm) and press one of the buttons;
  • the automatic single locking system is activated - the locks are locked and instantly unlocked, which indicates that the transmitter function has been successfully restored.

If the LEDs do not flash and the automatic single locking system does not work, then the entire process must be repeated again.

If you have additional transmitters for your car, you must restore their functions within 30 seconds (up to four transmitters in total). In this case, the steering wheel shaft lock must remain intact.

If one of the transmitters fails, you can purchase a spare one at a BMW service center.

Just as it is possible to make a copy of each key, the signal of the infrared transmitter can be copied in the same way. The signal code, which automatically changes after each use, as well as the possibility of repeated restoration of the function, provide the maximum guarantee against abuse. However, do not let strangers use the infrared transmitter.
