Removal and installation the lock cylinder and ignition switch (BMW 5 Series E34)

Removal



Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Remove the steering wheel.

Remove the steering wheel.


Remove the steering column trim by unscrewing four screws 1 and 2.

Removal the lock cylinder



Set the ignition key to the lock cylinder position "R" = 60°.

Set the ignition key to the lock cylinder position «R» = 60°.


Insert a 1.2 mm diameter wire into the side hole on the lock cylinder and press the locking spring. At the same time, pull out the lock cylinder.

Note: The access hole to the retaining spring may also be offset by 180° and lie on the opposite side.


Installing a lock cylinder



Set the ignition key to the lock cylinder position "R" = 60°.

Insert the lock cylinder into the ignition switch and press until it snaps into the spring clip.

Removal the ignition switch



Removal the ignition switch


Press the locking hooks on both sides with a narrow screwdriver and pull out the ignition switch.



Installing the ignition switch



Install the lock cylinder in the same position as with the ignition switch removed.

Place the ignition switch on and snap it into place.

Install the steering column covers.

Install the steering wheel.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Check the operation of the lock cylinder and ignition switch.
