The figure shows the BMW 535L reservoir Location of the reservoir in other models - see section "Engine compartment".
To avoid burns, open the reservoir cap only after the engine has cooled down, when the arrow of the temperature gauge is in the first third of the scale.
First, turn the reservoir cap slightly counterclockwise to relieve excess pressure, then remove it.
Do not fill liquid above the maximum allowable level, otherwise, when the engine heats up, its excess will be removed through the valve.
Caution: Never add coolant when the engine is hot.
Antifreeze for the cooling system contains ethylene glycol, which does not freeze at low temperatures, and anti-corrosion additives. The addition of other additives is not required.
To avoid possible damage, use only long-term anti-corrosion antifreezes certified by BMW. Consult a BMW workshop.
Caution: Coolant is poisonous. Keep it in a tightly closed original container out of the reach of children.
The coolant should be replaced every two years.
Warning: The coolant contains flammable ethylene glycol. Do not spill it on hot engine parts as it can cause severe burns if ignited.
