Turn on the ignition. Engage 3rd gear and depress the clutch pedal. Command the towing vehicle to move (blink your headlights).
Slowly release the pedal, as soon as the engine starts, depress the clutch again.
Turn off the alarm.
Contact a BMW workshop to have the cause of the difficulty starting the engine rectified.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
It is not possible to start the engine by towing, start the engine from an external battery (see related section).
Movement in tow
Turn the ignition key to position "1", to enable the brake lights, turn signals, horn and windshield wipers to work.
Turn on the emergency alarm (follow the rules of the country you are in).
In the event of an electrical failure on a towed vehicle, install a towing or emergency stop sign behind the rear window (triangle).
Vehicles with automatic transmission
Set the AT control lever to position "N".
The towing speed must not exceed 50 km/h.
It is possible to tow a car with AT for a distance not exceeding 50 km.
When towing a longer distance, add an additional 1 liter of oil to the automatic transmission or remove the cardan shaft. After repairing the car, be sure to reduce the amount of oil in the AT and bring its level to normal.
Attention: When the engine is not running, the power steering and brake booster do not work. Therefore, when braking and driving, you will have to make great efforts.
