Removal and installation the intake manifold — model 525tds (BMW 5 Series E39)

The intake manifold must be removed with a chain to provide access to other components, for example when working on the fuel supply system.

Removal



Remove the engine covers and charge air pipe.

Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim.

Caution: This will erase the contents of memory devices, such as the engine fault code memory device. Follow the instructions in the chapter "Removing and installing the battery".


Remove the positive battery terminal cover from the intake manifold. Loosen the positive terminal fastener and squeeze the 2 clamps. Unfasten the base by moving it downwards.

Remove the intake manifold "2" from the cylinder head in the following sequence.

Disconnect the wire from the boost air temperature sensor "3".

Disconnect the vacuum hose from the EGR valve "5" and from the bottom of the intake manifold,

Loosen the intake manifold fastening to the cylinder head and bracket and remove it together with the sealing gaskets "1". Do not loosen the EGR valve fastening with the gasket "4".

Installation



Replace all seals and tighten the intake manifold to the cylinder head to 25 Nm. Also tighten the oil filter support and the exhaust gas recirculation pipe to the intake manifold to 25 Nm.



Secure the positive battery terminal socket to the intake manifold and screw on the hex key. Replace the cover.

Install the engine trim covers and charge air pipe.

Connect the negative (-) battery cable. Set the clock. Tune the radio to transmitting stations.
