Checking/Adjusting High Pressure Fuel Pump Start-Up — Model 525tds (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

To check, you need a linear displacement indicator with a corresponding adapter for screwing into the high-pressure fuel pump. When checking, the engine must be cold, but its temperature must not be below +20°C.

Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.

Caution: This will erase the contents of memory devices, such as the engine fault code memory. Follow the instructions in Chapter "Removal and installation the battery".

Remove the intake manifold.

Remove the intake manifold.

Remove the intake manifold.

Unscrew plug "1" from the high-pressure fuel pump.

Screw in adapter "1" instead of the plug (BMW-135330) and the linear movement indicator "2" and tighten them a little.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise towards the TDC of the cylinder.

Turn the crankshaft until the indicator needle stops at the extreme point for a while. At the beginning of the turn, the crankshaft should be 60°-90° from the TDC position. The piston of cylinder 1 is in the TDC position when both camshaft cams on the chain drive side are facing up. To check the position of the cams, remove the oil filler cap.

To turn the crankshaft, engage 5th gear, release the handbrake and move the car forward. Or tighten the handbrake, put the gearshift lever in neutral and turn the crankshaft using a socket wrench on the central bolt on the belt pulley side.

Set the dial indicator scale to "0".

Set the dial indicator scale to «0».

Unscrew plug "1" on the cylinder block.

Turn the engine crankshaft clockwise to the TDC position, where a suitable locking pin can be inserted through the hole in the cylinder block (BMW-112300) into the hole on the flywheel and thereby fix the crankshaft.

Caution: Do not turn the engine crankshaft against its direction of rotation, as this will result in incorrect measurement results.

Now, if the drive chain is new, the linear travel indicator arrow should be opposite the value of 0.95±0.02 mm.

Caution: If the drive chain has been in operation for more than 20,000 km, the linear travel indicator arrow should be opposite the value of 0.90±0.02 mm.

Caution: If the drive chain has been in operation for more than 20,000 km, the linear travel…

If the specified value is not achieved, it is necessary to adjust the injection pump.

Loosen mounting bolt "3" but do not unscrew it.

Loosen nuts "1" and "2".

Note: To avoid overtightening due to the drive chain, loosen the nuts only slightly, about 2-3 turns.

By turning the high-pressure fuel pump, set the prescribed value of the dial indicator.

Tighten the fuel injection pump mounting nuts and bolt in sequence 1-3 to a torque of 25 Nm.

Remove the locking pin and check the fuel injection pump adjustment. To do this, turn the crankshaft only to the right.

Remove the linear movement indicator.

Insert the plug into the cylinder block.

Tighten the central threaded plug of the high-pressure fuel pump with a new sealing gasket to a torque of 25 Nm.

Tighten the oil filler cap.

Install the intake manifold, see next chapter.

Connect the ground (-) wire to the battery. Set the clock. Tune the radio to transmitting radio stations.

Start the engine and remove air from the fuel system if necessary.

After a test drive, check the tightness of the central threaded plug; if necessary, tighten the plug slightly.
