Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.
Attention: This erases the contents of memory devices, such as the engine trouble code memory. Follow the instructions given in the chapter "Removing and installing the battery".
Remove intake manifold.
Remove plug -1- from injection pump.
Screw in the adapter instead of the plug -1- (BMW-135330) and pointer indicator of linear movement -2- and slightly tighten them.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise towards TDC of the cylinder.
Turn the crankshaft until the indicator needle stops at its extreme point for a while. At the beginning of the turn, the crankshaft should be 60°-90°away from TDC. The piston of cylinder 1 is at TDC when both lobes of the camshaft on the side of the chain drive are facing up. To check the position of the cams, remove the oil filler cap.
To turn the crankshaft, engage 5th gear, release the handbrake and move the vehicle in the forward direction. Or, apply the handbrake, put the gear lever in neutral position and turn the crankshaft with a socket wrench by the central bolt on the side of the belt pulley.
Set the value on the dial indicator scale "0".
Remove plug -1- at cylinder block.
Turn the engine crankshaft in a clockwise direction to the TDC position when a suitable locking pin can be inserted through the hole in the cylinder block (BMW-112300) into the hole in the flywheel and thereby secure the crankshaft.
Attention: Do not turn the engine crankshaft against the direction of its rotation, as this will lead to incorrect measurement results.
Now, if the drive chain is new, the arrow of the linear movement indicator should be against the value of 0.95±0.02 mm.
Attention: If the drive chain has been operated for more than 20,000 km, then the pointer of the linear movement indicator should be against the value of 0.90±0.02 mm.
If the specified value is not reached, the injection pump must be adjusted.
Loosen securing bolt -3- but do not remove.
Loosen nuts -1- and -2-.
Attention: To avoid over tightening due to the drive chain, loosen the nuts not much, about 2-3 turns.
By turning the injection pump, set the prescribed value of the dial indicator.
Tighten the nuts and bolt for fastening the injection pump in sequence 1-3 to a torque of 25 Nm.
Remove locking pin and check injection pump adjustment. To do this, the crankshaft led to turn only to the right.
Remove the linear indicator.
Insert the plug into the cylinder block.
Screw in the central screw plug of the high pressure pump with a new gasket to a torque of 25 Nm.
Screw on the oil filler cap.
Install intake manifold, see next chapter.
Connect ground wire (-) battery. Set clock. Tune the radio to transmitting radio stations.
Start the engine, if necessary, remove air from the power supply system.
After a test drive, check the tightness of the central screw plug, if necessary tighten the plug a little.
