Checking/Removing and Installing the Pre-Glow Relay — Model 525tds (BMW 5 Series E39)

Removal



To gain access to the relay and fuse box, remove the fine air filter housing in the rear right side of the engine compartment.

Unscrew the fastener and remove the fuse box cover.

Unscrew the fastener and remove the fuse box cover.


Remove relay "1" of glow plugs. 2 - control unit of DDE system.

Check the 80 amp blade fuse next to the plug connector, if a fault is found, replace the fuse. First, determine and eliminate the cause of the overload.

Unscrew the fastening of the thick positive wire from the relay housing.

The figure shows the glow plug relay connection diagram. The corresponding location of the plugs is stamped on the glow plug relay cover.



G1...G6: glow plugs 1...6;

KI. 15: positive, switched on via ignition and starter switch;
KI. 30: battery plus;
Ugt: control voltage (from the DME control unit);
Dia: diagnostic connector.


Connect the battery and connect the voltage tester to terminal 15 of the plug and ground. Turn on the ignition. The LED of the semiconductor device should light up, otherwise check the voltage supply from the ignition switch.

If the voltage tester LED lights up, check the glow plug lead wire and replace the wire if necessary. Otherwise, replace the glow plug relay.

Replace the control unit cover.

Close the electronics unit. Install cleaning filter air supplied to the cabin.
