Removal and installation the oxygen sensor (BMW 5 Series E39)
Caution: When applying a protective coating to the underbody, the oxygen sensor must be covered.
Removal
Remove the engine cover above the injectors, see page 10.
Raise the car.

Disconnect the oxygen sensor plug connectors by first releasing the clamps.
Release the wire holder.
Unscrew the oxygen sensors from the outlet pipe. At the same time, turn the wires along with the sensors by hand to avoid them breaking or being pulled out.
Installation
Caution: Do not clean the oxygen sensor or allow it to come into contact with lubricants.
Only treat the thread of the oxygen sensor with high-temperature special grease Antiseize.
Note: If you screw in an oxygen sensor without high-temperature special grease, the thread will stick over time. As a result, the sensor will no longer be unscrewed. New oxygen sensors already have high-temperature special grease applied.
Screw the oxygen sensor into the outlet pipe and tighten to 30 Nm.
Lay the electrical wire and connect the plug connector. Lay the wire so that it does not fray or touch the exhaust system.
Install the engine cover.
