Instructions for the disposal of vehicles with gas generators (airbag system) (BMW X3 E83)
The gas generator is a pyrotechnic component of the following units:
In accordance with safety regulations or national requirements, gas generators must be rendered unusable before disposal. This is necessary because pyrotechnic components can cause injury if accidentally ignited (for example, in gas cutting).
On vehicles intended for recycling, before draining fluids and further disassembling, it is necessary to ensure that all gas generators in the vehicle have been ignited. Deactivated gas generators can be disposed of together with the vehicle.
If ignition according to all the rules is not possible, then it is necessary to remove the relevant parts and send them for disposal to a special facility.
Observe safety regulations when handling airbag system components.
If the pyropatron does not ignite, disconnect the ignition device from the battery and approach the vehicle, waiting a few minutes.
Ignition of gas generators must only be carried out by qualified personnel and under the supervision of a responsible person. It is also necessary to observe the usual safety precautions for such work (protective glasses, earplugs).
In vehicles destined for recycling, gas generators are ignited with the doors closed, but the trunk, windows and hatch open. The mechanic performing the work must be outside. To ignite, it is necessary to use a BMW-developed igniter with the appropriate cables.

Non-ignitability
If ignition according to all the rules is not possible, then it is necessary to remove the relevant parts and send them for disposal to a special facility.
Observe safety regulations when handling airbag system components.
If the pyropatron does not ignite, disconnect the ignition device from the battery and approach the vehicle, waiting a few minutes.
Please note: Airbag system components are always subject to recycling. Further sale of airbag system parts as used parts is not permitted.
Ignition

Attention:
- After the gas generators ignite, ventilate the vehicle with the doors open for at least 10 minutes. Only then can work continue.
- When handling a triggered gas generator, wear protective glasses and gloves.
- When burning a solid combustible mixture, the air cushion unit heats up - there is a risk of burns.
- If a detonated gas generator comes into contact with the skin, wash the affected area with water.
