Ignition system characteristics (BMW 3 Series E21)

Ignition system of engines of cars of the "316" models (up to 1980 model year), "318", "320" and "320i" contact battery ignition. Includes ignition distributor sensor, ignition coil, spark plugs and low and high voltage wires.

Ignition system of engines of cars of models "315", "316" (since 1981 model year) and "318i" contactless TSZi. Control pulses are sent to the switch from a contactless sensor located in the ignition distributor. The vacuum regulator of the ignition distributor corrects the ignition advance and retard angle.

Cylinder firing order: 1-3-4-2.

Ignition coil



Terminal markings: "15", "+", "1", "-", "4" to the central contact of the ignition distributor sensor.

Brand and type of ignition coil for contact ignition system: Bosch K 12V 0221 119 035.

Primary winding resistance, Ohm: 2.9-3.4.

Note: Ignition system of cars of the "316" models (up to 1980 model year), "318", "320", "320i" can be equipped with a Bosch KW 12V 0221 119 017 ignition coil, provided that an additional resistance of 0.9±0.05 Ohm is installed. Primary winding resistance, Ohm: 1.7-2.1.

Brand and type of ignition coil for contactless ignition system: Bosch 0221 122 319.

Distributor



Ignition distributor with a centrifugal limiter of the number of revolutions of the shaft built into the rotor (no more than 6600 rpm) bosch company.

Resistance of the rotor noise suppression resistor, kOhm: 5. Direction of shaft rotation:
  • contact ignition system distributor: right;
  • contactless ignition system distributor sensor: left.

Breaker cam angle, degrees: 59-65.

Gap between breaker contacts, mm: 0.35.

Breaker contact pressure, g: 500-630.

Brand and type of capacitor: Bosch 1 237 330 295.

Capacitor capacity, μF: 0.18-0.22.

Insulation resistance, kOhm, not less than: 200.

Initial ignition advance angle before TDC: 3°.

Angle of closed state of breaker contacts, degrees: 66-72.

Characteristics of the sensor-distributor of the contactless ignition system



Operating range of the centrifugal ignition advance regulator according to crankshaft speed, rpm:
  • "316": 1250-5500;
  • "318i": 1000-3000.

Maximum ignition advance angle provided by the centrifugal regulator, deg, along the crankshaft:
  • "316": 24;
  • "318i": 15.

Working area of the vacuum regulator at ignition advance, mm Hg ("316" and "318i"): 200-300.

Maximum ignition advance angle provided by the vacuum regulator, degrees, on the crankshaft ("316" and "318i"): 11.

Working area of the vacuum regulator with ignition delay, mm Hg ("316"): 360-500.

Maximum ignition delay angle provided by the vacuum regulator, degrees, along the crankshaft ("316"): 8.

The gap between the screen projections and the stator contacts of the pulse generator, mm: 0.35-0.70.
