Low beam gas discharge lamps (xenon lamps) (BMW 3 Series E46)

            0

Compared to the halogen lamps of the basic configuration, headlights with gas discharge lamps (xenon lamps) have a brighter low beam, similar to daylight. Gas-discharge lamps reach their full power 3 seconds after switching on. In gas-discharge lamps, the bulb is filled with xenon gas, and the light is created as a result of the ignition of an arc due to the application of voltage between two electrodes. To operate a gas-discharge lamp, electronic control devices and a source that briefly creates a voltage of 28,000 V to ignite the light arc are necessary. To create double the luminous intensity of a conventional 55 W lamp, a gas-discharge lamp requires a power of 35 W.

Gas discharge lamps have a long service life. They are replaced, if at all required, after several years of operation.

When replacing gas discharge lamps (xenon lamps, additional equipment) there is a danger to life due to unskilled handling of the high-voltage element of the lamp. Therefore, lamp replacement is not described here.

The xenon headlight system is equipped with dynamic beam range control, which automatically responds to changes in the vehicle load.

Dynamic adjustment of the beam range of headlights with gas discharge lamps

To eliminate the blinding effect on oncoming traffic, the headlights are equipped with dynamic beam range control, which automatically sets the beam range of the headlights depending on the different vehicle loads.

Sensors on the front and rear suspension register every change in the vehicle's level. An electronic control unit processes the signals from the sensors and, via electric motors, adjusts the position of the headlight reflectors accordingly.

Manual adjustment of the beam range is not provided. If there is a fault in the electric adjustment system, the headlights are automatically set to the lowest position.

A special BMW diagnostic tool is required to adjust and read the fault memory of the gas discharge headlights. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. These works can only be performed at a service station.
