Gas discharge lamps have a long service life. Their replacement, if required at all, is carried out after a few years of operation.
When replacing gas discharge lamps (xenon lamps, additional equipment) there is a danger to life due to improper handling of the high voltage element of the lamp. Therefore, lamp replacement is not described here.
The xenon headlight system features dynamic headlight range control that automatically responds to changes in vehicle load.
Dynamic headlight range control with gas discharge lamps
To avoid dazzling effect on oncoming traffic, the headlights are equipped with dynamic range control, which automatically sets the headlight beam range depending on the different vehicle loads.
Sensors on the front and rear suspension register every change in vehicle level. The electronic control unit processes the signals from the sensors and adjusts the position of the headlight reflectors accordingly via the electric motors.
Manual adjustment of the range of light is not provided. If there is a malfunction in the electrical adjustment system, the headlights are automatically set to the lowest position.
A special BMW diagnostic tool is required to adjust and read the fault memory for headlights with gas discharge lamps. Refer to Section Troubleshooting. These works can only be carried out at the service station.
