Removal and installation the clutch release bearing (BMW 3 Series E46)
Noise in the clutch release bearing when the clutch pedal is pressed, indicates damage to the bearing. When replacing the driven disk, it is recommended to also replace the bearing in question.
1. Remove the manual transmission, refer to Section Removal and installation of manual transmission.
2. Remove bearing "1" from the primary shaft of the box. Remove lever "4" from spring bracket "5" and remove it.
3. Check the bearing by hand. To do this, lightly squeeze the bearing and rotate it. It should rotate easily. Otherwise, replace it.
1. Clean the lever and lightly lubricate its sliding surfaces with "F" grease "ESSO UNRIX S2".
2. If there is damage, replace the spring clip "5" and ball pin "6".
3. Wipe the guide bushing "7".
4. Install the lever with the bearing on the primary shaft of the manual transmission and secure it with a spring clip.
5. Clean the sliding surfaces on the clutch release bearing. Do not wash the bearing in gasoline. Surfaces "2" of the clutch release bearing must fit against surfaces "3" of the lever.
