Removal and installation the clutch release bearing (BMW 5 Series E39)

An audible noise in the bearing when the clutch is disengaged, that is, when the clutch pedal is pressed, indicates a defect in the clutch release bearing.

Removal

Remove the gearbox, see page 75.



Remove clutch release bearing "1" from the gearbox input shaft. Remove clutch release lever "4" from spring bracket "5" and remove.

Check the clutch release bearing manually. To do this, lightly squeeze and rotate the bearing. The bearing should rotate easily, otherwise it must be replaced.

Installation

Clean the clutch release lever and lightly treat the sliding surfaces "F" with ESSO UNIREX S2 grease.



Replace the spring clip "5" and the pin with a spherical head "8" if damaged.

Caution: When using a 56S 420G gearbox, always replace the spring clip and the ball-head pin with new ones. The gearbox type is indicated in the lowest line of the three-line designation. The designation can be located in the following places: in the middle of the gearbox at the bottom; on the clutch basket below; on the sticker located on the left side of the gearbox extension.

Wipe the guide sleeve "7". Do not lubricate the guide sleeve, otherwise the clutch release bearing on the guide sleeve may seize.

Install the clutch release lever and bearing on the gearbox drive shaft and secure them with a spring clip.

Clean the sliding surfaces of the clutch release bearing. Do not wash the bearing in gasoline. Sliding surfaces "2" of the clutch release bearing must fit against sliding surfaces "3" of the clutch release lever, see Figure W-2829.

Install the gearbox.
