If your vehicle is equipped with an air bag, do not attempt the following procedure. Leave this to your dealer service department, as there is a risk of injury if the air bag mechanism is accidentally activated.
If your vehicle's radio is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you enter the correct code before disconnecting the battery.
If after connecting the battery all the text on the instrument cluster display is in the wrong language, refer to Section Anti-theft audio system and instrument cluster language, where the procedure for installing the required language is given.
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Using a small screwdriver, pry up and remove the BMW emblem in the center of the steering wheel.

3. Loosen the steering wheel nut and mark the position of the steering wheel hub relative to the shaft.
4. On 1986 and later models, turn the ignition key to the home position to unlock the ignition switch.
5. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. If it is difficult to remove, use a special puller to remove the steering wheel - do not hit the shaft with a hammer.
Installation
Install in reverse order. Don't forget to align the marks on the steering wheel and shaft made during removal. Tighten the steering wheel nut to the required torque.
