Removal and installation the power steering pump (BMW 5 Series E28)

Removal

1. Jack up the vehicle and securely place it on axle stands. Remove the engine sump.

2. On E28 ("retro") models, discharge the hydraulic system by depressing the brake pedal approximately 20 times.

3. Disconnect the return line hose and drain the fluid from the reservoir into a clean container. Disconnect the inlet line from the pump.

4. If you need to remove the pulley from the pump, tighten the pump drive belt by hand and loosen the pulley nuts or bolts.

5. Loosen the steering pump drive belt tensioner bolt and remove the belt (see chapter Routine car maintenance).

6. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the steering pump.



Typical steering pump mounting bolts are indicated by arrows.

Installation

1. Install in the reverse order. Tighten the nuts and bolts securely. Adjust the drive belt tension (see chapter Routine car maintenance).

2. Add liquid to the reservoir to the required level (see chapter Routine car maintenance) and pump the system (see section Bleeding the hydraulic system of the power steering mechanism).
